Sir Malcolm was appointed Principal in January 2023, having studied Jurisprudence as an undergraduate and studied for a D Phil in Law at Regent’s. For over thirty years he was an academic international lawyer at Bristol University, where he was also Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law. His areas of interest include the law of the sea and international human rights law, in particular the international protection of freedom of religion or belief and the prohibition and prevention of torture. For over ten years he chaired a UN body visiting places of detention around the world to contribute to the prevention of torture. He was also a member of the Independent Inquiry on Child Sexual Abuse in England and Wales.
Responsibilities
The role of the Principal is to sustain and enhance the College as a place of excellence in education and research, supporting the welfare and progress of students and the development of its staff, whilst representing and advancing the College’s interests with the University of Oxford and within the Collegiate University, whilst acting as an ambassador for the College and its members, both nationally and internationally, to heighten its external engagement, reputation, and recognition.
